When choosing a name, you need to straddle the line between clever and catchy and practical and informative. It should be intriguing but also explain what the podcast is about. The biggest challenge is the length. You have so little space on the podcast’s thumbnail that you need to communicate a lot in a few words.

You need to own your podcast name in as many places as possible. When deciding on a name, consider the availability of a domain for the podcast website and if you will be able to register dedicated social media accounts with it. Avoid putting a dash in the name if you can.Can your colleagues, friends and family remember the name easily? Try out several options on people around you and see how they react. Keep it easy to hear, easy to spell and easy to find. Will people shorten it or abbreviate it? How will it sound/look then?Should I give my podcast my own name? Some people do, especially if they’re well known. But it’s a good idea for the name to include what your podcast is about. Examples are “The Culture Gabfest” (people chatting about current cultural trends) or “Short History of…” (concise overviews of a historical events or people). Not checking if a podcast with the same name already exists. This can cause confusion when people search for your podcast in various directories.
  • Look in podcast directories to see if your proposed name is already being used or not.
  • Ask your friends and family for feedback and if you know other podcasters, ask them too. If you don’t know how your podcast is being received you can’t do anything to evolve it. [Galdem a talk]
